James Alan Hetfield (born August 3 1963) is an American musician from the United States. He is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, as well as co-founder and main songwriter of metal group Metallica. He is most well-known for his masterful rhythm guitar playing however, he also occasionally performs solos and guitar solos, both live and in the studio. Hetfield was the co-founder of Metallica in the fall of 1981, following having responded to an advertisement written by drummer Lars Ulrich in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler. Metallica won nine Grammy Awards, and has released ten studio albums and three extended plays as well as 24 singles.
