She began writing from the age of eight. Although her parents tried to protect their daughters from the political turmoil which was taking place at the time, Alisa gradually developed her opinions and was a proponent of an elected republican government over constitutional monarchy. At the age of 9, Rand decided to become a writer, inspired especially by the novels of Victor Hugo. So, during the time of the "February Revolution" broke out in Saint Petersburg in 1917, the 12 year old Alisa favored Alexander Kerensky over Tsar Nicholas II. However, as the 'October Revolution' started at the end of 1917, their life as a family was totally interrupted. Her father's business was taken by the Bolsheviks and her family fled to the Crimea to begin an entirely new life.
