James Alan Hetfield (born August 3, 1963) is an American musician. He is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, as well as co-founder, and main songwriter of Metallica, a heavy metal group. He is mainly known for his precision rhythm playing, but occasionally performs solos and lead guitar, both live and in the studio. Hetfield was the co-founder of Metallica in the month of October, 1981 after answering an advertisement by drummer Lars Ulrich in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler. Metallica has been awarded nine Grammy Awards and released ten studio albums including three live albums, four extended plays, and 24 singles.In 2009, Hetfield was ranked at No. Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists ranks Hetfield at No. 8. Hit Parader ranked 24 on their 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists List. Guitar World asked that he is the older half brother of two and one younger sibling.
