Phil

The Greek root -phil- originates from the Greek word meaning "love". For instance philosophy (along with the Greek root -soph, which translates to 'wisdom') is the study of human behavior and the meaning of life. One of the most popular applications of the root -philis in connection with philias.A"philia" is the affection or obsession with a particular thing or subject. The suffix -philia is used to indicate the affection or love for something more specific. It is somewhat anaonymous to -phobia. Philias could be biological (e.g. Rhizophilia, a preference for living in roots) or chemical (e.g. Chromophilous, substances that are easily stained), or can be a hobby/liking (e.g. Icthyophilia is the love of fish. Philia (TSyKHy), is a Greek word that means love, is a reference to brotherly affection, friendship, and love. This contrasts with the Greek terms Eros which means sexual or romantic love, and agape or detached, spiritual love. However, English usage differs in some instances from the etymological meaning and a number of these terms refer to sexual attraction in English not to love for brothers but rather to sexual attraction.
