Ja Morant was born Temetrius Jamel Morant to Jamie and Tee in Dalzell, South Carolina on August 10, 1999. His father was a basketball player at Claflin University and his mother was a high school point guard until she was an NCAA softball player. He has a younger sister called Teniya who also plays basketball. As a child, Morant practiced basketball in the backyard with his father. Morant then went on to play in the Amateur Athletic Union circuit with the South Carolina Hornets. To pursue his studies, Morant went to Crestwood High School, where he was a player on the basketball team. In the course of his schooling Morant was the school's all-time leading scorer, with 1,679 points.
