Adeline Virginia Woolf (/wUlf/; nee Stephen; 25 January 1882 - 28 March 1941) was an English writer, considered one of the best contemporary 20th century authors. She was also a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as an narrative device.Woolf was born into an affluent family located in South Kensington, London, the seventh child of Julia Prinsep Jackson and Leslie Stephen in a blended family of eight which included the painter modernist Vanessa Bell. Since her early years, she was educated in her home in Victorian literature and English classics. She was a student in the Ladies' Dept at King's College London from 1897 to 1901. The college was where she learned about history and classics. Her father encouraged her to write professionally in the year 1900. Following her father's passing in 1904 The Stephen family moved from Kensington to more bohemian Bloomsbury, where, in together with the brothers' intellectual acquaintances, they established the artistic and literary Bloomsbury Group. Leonard Woolf married her in 1912 and the couple founded the Hogarth Press in 1917. This published much of her writings.
