American musician James Alan Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963. He is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, co-founder and principal songwriter for the heavy metal group Metallica. His intricate rhythm playing is his forte. However, he occasionally plays solos and leads guitar live , or in the studio. Hetfield was the co-founder of Metallica in October 1981 following an advertisement put out by drummer Lars Ulrich in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler. Metallica has won nine Grammy Awards, and has released ten studio albums, three extended plays, and 24 singles. Hetfield was ranked No. Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists places Hetfield at No. 8. Hit Parader placed him at No. 8 in Joel McIver's book of the 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists and at No. 24 on the Hit Parader's list of the 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists.
